The Orange Prize shortlist has been announced and I think it's a bit of a shocker. No Anne Enright for a start, an omission that I simply don't understand, no Jennifer Egan and several books I wasn't expecting, like Patricia Wood's Lottery and Heather O'Neill's Lullabies for Little Criminals. Still, very exciting.
- Nancy Huston Fault Lines
- Sadie Jones The Outcast
- Charlotte Mendelson When We Were Bad
- Heather O’Neill Lullabies for Little Criminals
- Rose Tremain The Road Home
- Patricia Wood Lottery
I love the moment after a shortlist is announced, when I realise that I'm about to read six books I wouldn't ordinarily try. It makes me feel flushed. I have two of the titles lined up already: Atlantic Books very kindly sent me a copy of Fault Lines by Nancy Huston, and the library have come through with Lottery. I'm still on the interminable waiting list for When We Were Bad, The Road Home and The Outcast. Not sure where I'm going to lay my hands on a copy of Lullabies. The library have a copy on order, but it might take a month to arrive on the shelves given their tedious acquisition system.
Let the reading begin!
